FAQ

1. What components are required to set up an off-grid solar system?

To assemble an off-grid solar setup, you'll need solar panels, a charge controller to regulate the flow of electricity, and batteries for storing the energy. Additionally, proper cabling and connectors are required to safely link the panels, controller, and battery bank.

2. What is the difference between on-grid and off-grid solar systems?

On-grid systems are connected to the main electrical grid, while off-grid systems operate independently, storing power in batteries for use when needed. Off-grid systems are not affected by power outages in the main grid.

3. Why might my solar panel be generating less power than expected?

Reduced power output can result from environmental factors such as shade, cloudy conditions, high temperatures, or accumulated dirt and debris on the panel surface. Regular cleaning and optimal placement can help maintain performance.

4. How should I wire solar panels: series or parallel?

Connecting panels in series increases the total voltage while the current remains the same as one panel. Parallel wiring increases the total current while the voltage stays the same as one panel. You can combine series and parallel connections to meet your system’s voltage and power requirements.

5. How do I determine the number of solar panels needed?

Calculate your energy requirements first. Consider your daily power usage in watt-hours and factor in a safety margin. Once you know the required battery capacity, you can determine how many solar panels are needed to provide sufficient power for your system.

1 year later: Consistent 300W+ output and very smart specs!

It’s been a full year since I installed 4 of these Callsun 100W panels in a 2-Series, 2-Parallel (2S2P) config on my van conversion. So far, so good! Under solid peak sun, I regularly get around 300W, and in rare ideal conditions, I’ve seen it hit 330W. That’s an impressive 75-82W per panel. I also run two Renogy panels, and these Callsun ones perform at the exact same efficiency level under the same conditions.

The specs are very well-optimized for DIY setups. With a 5.90A Isc, running them in parallel keeps my total current safely under my power station's 15A limit.

I actually tried running 3 in series before, but sometimes my unit would show an error and get zero input. After checking the spec sheet, I realized why: these panels have a solid 21.17V Voc. Three of them in series pushes the total voltage over 63V, which was tripping my power station's 60V over-voltage protection! It makes total sense now. Stick to a 2S2P setup if you have a 60V limit, or prepare to upgrade your solar generator. I'm actually planning to get 2 more panels for a 3S2P setup once I upgrade my power station.

I was initially worried about the longevity and UV fading that happens to cheap flexible panels, but the high-quality ETFE film on these has held up perfectly. After a year baking in the sun, there is zero yellowing or fading.

They weigh only about 5.7 lbs per panel and are super thin. When I’m not traveling, I easily take them off my van roof and put them on a homemade rack in my yard to offset my home electricity. They are so lightweight that I can effortlessly move the rack by hand to track the sun. Plus, the fact that they come with thick 12AWG cables instead of cheap thin wires is a huge bonus for reducing power loss. Excellent purchase!

Great product at a great price! Exceeded expectations.

Great product at a great price. The item is exactly as described and shipped early. I liked the first one so much that I immediately bought a second one. It charges up my station very well.

Yesterday I pointed this Callsun 100W Flexible Solar Panel toward the western sky at about 3:00 PM, and it actually produced a peak of 101 watts for a few seconds! On a typical nice day here in Michigan, it commonly generates between 60 and 80 watts steadily, which is an amazing real-world yield for a flexible panel.

At only 5.7 lbs, it’s super lightweight and very easy to handle or reposition to chase the sun. I would highly recommend this panel to anyone looking for efficient, high-quality solar!

Highly recommend! Light, flexible, and great value.

Hey guys, great quality here. I already mounted 2 of these Callsun 100W Flexible Solar Panels permanently onto my RV roof, and I use a 3rd one as a movable/portable panel to manually chase the sun and charge up my power station.

They are super lightweight, flexible, and easy to handle. Full 5 stars from me for the performance and price!

¡Excelente calidad!

Easy to install on RV roof. Great support!

So far so good. I'm getting about 5 amps of output in full sun, which is right on par with the 5.38A Imp rating on the spec sheet. I used heavy-duty roofing tape around the perimeter to secure it tightly on my RV roof, and the ultra-lightweight design made the process super easy.

I’ve read online where cheap flexible panels tend to fail or yellow within two years due to UV degradation. However, seeing the quality of the multi-layer ETFE coating on this Callsun panel, I’m much more confident about its longevity. That said, definitely do not use cheap double-sided tape to install these—proper rubber roofing tape is the way to go.

Update: I had one panel that was putting out less voltage than the others after a few months. I contacted Callsun's customer service, and they took care of it that same day, shipping out a replacement without any hassle. It's rare to see a solar brand with such responsive support.

Great panels, great 5-year warranty backup, and awesome value. Highly recommend!

Great Low Price Flexible Solar Panel - Perfect for Truck Campers!

I bought 6 of these Callsun 100W panels and installed them on top of my truck camper, using a Renogy DCC50S as the MPPT charge controller.

Since the DCC50S has a 25V solar voltage limit, I configured all 6 panels in parallel. With the panels' 21.17V Voc, they sit safely within the controller's voltage range. They seem to work exactly as advertised! Even when the controller caps the charging current to its 25A limit, having a 6-panel parallel array ensures I get maximum power even on overcast days.

The build quality is impressive. At just 5.7 lbs per panel, they are very lightweight and adding 6 of them didn't weigh down my camper roof at all. The construction seems high quality with the multi-layer ETFE coating—they do not seem flimsy or cheaply made to me like some other PET panels I've seen.

Also, a huge plus for parallel setups: these panels come pre-wired with thick 12AWG cables. When you are combining multiple panels in parallel, having heavy-duty 12AWG wires is crucial to handle the higher combined amperage and minimize power loss before it hits the controller.

The real test will be longevity over the seasons, but for now, I am very happy with my purchase. Excellent value for a rock-solid 11BB flexible panel!

Great 100W flexible panel for van life!

I am using this Callsun 100W Flexible Solar Panel on the roof of my camper van and I'm very satisfied. It's lightweight, thin, and contours perfectly to slightly curved surfaces. The pre-drilled mounting holes made it incredibly easy to set up a quick, temporary mount using suction cups when we are parked.

Real-world performance: Connected to my EcoFlow Delta 2 in full sun, it consistently pulls around 75W. For a 100W rated panel, this is a very realistic and solid yield that easily covers my 12V car fridge power consumption during our stops.

The build quality feels rugged with the premium ETFE coating, and the heavy-duty 12AWG cables make it a true plug-and-play experience.

A must-have for emergency backup and off-grid living!

This product arrived quickly and in minimal waste packaging. This Callsun 100W Flexible Solar Panel is an absolute must-have! It is very reasonably priced when it comes to quality solar gear, and it's perfect to have for living off the grid, car camping, or in case of an emergency power outage.

Having a reliable solar panel to charge a backup battery or directly top up your electronics is so important, and this one does a fantastic job. I was able to hook this up to a portable battery station that I use to power everyday items like phones, power banks, and other rechargeable devices. As long as I keep the battery plugged into the panel, it stays full. You do need to ensure that you get decent direct sun, but thanks to its efficient 11BB cells, it does a great job at charging the battery quickly. Highly recommend!

Solid performer that actually lives up to its specs!

I was surprised to see a 100 watt flexible panel for this price, as most are at least 40 to 50 dollars more with recent inflation. But when I hooked this Callsun 100W Flexible Solar Panel up to my test setup, I could see they really nailed the engineering on this one.

Wattage, voltage, and current are all related (W = V × A). Many panels on the market pump up their rated voltage too high, which drops the available current. This Callsun panel balances it perfectly with an 18.61V Vmp and 5.38A Imp.

Most 100 watt panels I have tested over the years tend to deliver around 92-95% of their rated values due to real-world wiring losses and component efficiency. While testing this panel in direct sun, my charge controller was stepping down the voltage to charge the battery, but I put my multimeter directly on the inputs from the panel and saw a solid 19.3 volts. It was pulling right around 5 amps of current, which mathematically puts the actual output at a steady 95-96 watts! Getting that close to 100% efficiency in a real-world, non-laboratory environment is highly impressive. The 11BB cells and thick 12AWG wires definitely help eliminate unnecessary power drops.

The panel itself is pretty flexible, and the pre-drilled mounting holes make it easy if you want to mount it to a surface using hooks or screws. I plan on using adhesive and mounting it directly on a flat roof surface on my RV to keep my batteries charged in the off-season.

It’s a decent panel and it does seem exceptionally well-made. Flexibility is good, and it performs pretty much right on its spec'd value. Incredible bang for your buck!

Good value - Holding up great in the Florida sun!

Update: Still working with absolutely no noticeable degradation. My setup is consistently pulling in 1.5-1.9 kWh per day on a sunny day.

When I first ordered these Callsun 100W panels, I was a bit skeptical because the price was so competitive for the specs they offer. Fast forward to now, I've been so impressed with the stability that I have purchased 7 of them in total for my off-grid system.

Right after the initial setup, I hooked up a pair in series and was easily pulling 150 watts even late in the day when the sun was getting low. That’s about 75W+ per panel in weak light, which is completely on par with the pricier Renogy flex panel running right next to it. The low-light performance thanks to the 11BB cells and textured ETFE surface is definitely noticeable.

Time will tell the ultimate longevity, but after months of baking under the brutal Florida sun and heat, there is zero yellowing, zero warping, and the daily power yield remains rock solid. The heavy-duty 12AWG pre-installed wires also make a huge difference in keeping the line resistance down for a multi-panel array like mine.

If you are looking for an ultra-lightweight, flexible panel that delivers real-world performance without breaking the bank, this is an incredible value.

True To "Flexing" Its "Muscle!"

My, oh my! I tested this Callsun 100W solar panel and I can see that within capacity it packs a rather healthy-sized punch. It’s quite a good-looking piece of camping technology with that clean white frame.

There is yet to discover for long-term durability, but judging by the rugged ETFE coating and Grade A+ build, it feels like it's built to last. I'm currently tinkering with it to test its potential for my "RV-cycle" setup to maintain a daily charge for the e-bike battery.

Installation looks like a total no-brainer to me, especially since it comes with pre-drilled holes and thick, heavy-duty 12AWG cables right out of the box.

Battery charge? Again I say it packs a punch. Thanks to its 11BB cell design and 23% high efficiency, its low-light performance is insane. Just out of curiosity, I connected a charge controller to it under bright indoor ceiling lights, and it managed to pull about a third of the voltage of its nominal output! If it can do that indoors under regular lights, I can only imagine how much oomph it ought to generate at noon under the blazing sun!

Great value, lightweight, and perfect for unique DIY setups. Highly recommended!

Perfect supplement for my van setup! Lightweight and efficient.

Ordered one Callsun 100W panel first for a test. Connected to my Anker C1000 unit, it produced a steady mid-80s watts in decent sun, which I consider to be an excellent real-world output for a flexible panel. I was so impressed by the performance that I now have 4 of them in my setup.

At just 5.7 lbs (2.59 kg) per panel, they are very lightweight and incredibly easy to handle. These will perfectly supplement the fixed 320 watts of rigid 'glass' panels already on my camper van roof, giving me a massive boost when off-grid, and charging my Anker C1000 power station as required.

The build quality feels fantastic with the ETFE coating, and the fact that they come pre-wired with thick 12AWG cables made connecting them in my configuration a breeze with zero noticeable power loss. Excellent purchase, definitely worth it!

Exceptional daily yield thanks to the ETFE texture! Great value.

Efficient panel at a great price! I originally bought one to test with my Victron SmartSolar MPPT, and I was so impressed that I immediately ordered more for my setup.

While the absolute peak I’ve seen from a single panel is around 89W (which is totally normal for a 100W flexible panel under real-world conditions), the overall daily energy yield is fantastic. Callsun uses a textured ETFE surface on these, and it acts like a prism that captures and focuses sunlight even at lower angles. Because of this, these panels actually start producing usable power earlier in the morning and keep going later into the evening compared to my standard fixed glass panels. The cumulative power throughout the day is excellent.

A few practical notes for installation:
The metal mounting eyelets are a bit small if you use heavy-duty hardware. I had to modify them slightly to fit my preferred LOXX fasteners for my boat/rv setup. Also, the positive and negative 12AWG wires exit the junction box in opposite directions. To keep my cable management clean and run them parallel, I just looped one wire neatly underneath the panel. Speaking of wires, the included 12AWG cables are heavy-duty and significantly reduce voltage drop.

As for durability, the multilayer ETFE construction feels incredibly tough and UV-resistant. Unlike cheap PET panels that yellow and degrade after one season, these feel like they are built to last. For the price and performance, it’s an absolute steal!

Highest panel output per (active) square inch I've measured so far

Just under 712 square inches of active area (not overall panel dimensions) with a rated Max output of .14 watts (140 milliwatts) per sq in. Thanks to the 23% high efficiency and 11BB monocrystalline cells on this Callsun 100W Flexible Solar Panel, this is the highest output for a panel's active area I've seen for all the flexible panels I've tested. The market average has been about .124 (124 milliwatts). I saw well over 6 amps out of the controller using a true MPPT charge controller with an LiFePo4 battery as a test load in full sun.

Flexible panels are often installed flush on RV roofs, and this can dramatically affect output due to a lack of cooling. I prefer to use portable arrays in camp. I tested this one leaned against a collapsible plastic step stool that offered a good enough angle to the sun without exposing excessive sail area in variable winds.

At only 5.7 lbs, it’s still an absolute featherweight compared to a standard 100W compact rigid mono panel (~14 lbs each). A couple of these as additional support for a movable portable array is a fantastic idea. I have also seen people mount these on DIY PVC frames and use them as an ultralight small RV window "awning" that generates electricity while shading the interior. I can definitely see my 14lb rigid glass panels being replaced by these!

Even with the premium ETFE coating and heavy-duty 12AWG cables, there's a lot of opportunity here. For their easy portability, they are completely dust and waterproof with that solid IP68 rating. Outstanding engineering!

Excellent for a 12V backup system!

The Callsun 100W Flexible Solar Panel puts out the perfect voltage (Vmp 18.61V) to charge a 12V battery array efficiently.

So far, I've set up a home emergency test system with this panel charging a LiFePO4 battery and an inverter. The inverter output goes through a transfer switch that automatically switches to the battery backup whenever the main grid goes down. It's all working flawlessly together!

The build quality is great—the panel is light (only 5.7 lbs) and slightly flexible, making it very easy to handle or flush-mount. I really appreciate that it comes with heavy-duty 12AWG cables pre-wired, which gives me much more peace of mind with the current running into my DIY controller setup. Extremely happy with it.
